Heaven and Hell
2327 18th St NW
Washington, DC 20009
(202) 667-4355
Best known for its Thursday-night '80s Dance Party, these two-clubs-in-one have more than just Duran Duran and Eurythmics hits pulling the crowds in. Yes, Heaven's '80s night still manages to draw long lines even though the event has been around almost since the '80s ended. But, the celestial club's other themed weeknights pull in their share of dancers and weekends at both clubs usually mean wall-to-wall people. If you're wondering about the layout, you've probably already guessed that Heaven is located upstairs and Hell below street level. The Green Island Cafe, not Limbo or Purgatory, separates the two. Heaven, once a narrow, one-room club, now stretches across two rooms and boasts one of Adams-Morgan's few (but increasingly popular) roof-top decks. While Hell does host some cutting- edge DJs, it's less of a dance-club then Heaven and more of a bar complete with bar stools (a rarity at Heaven) and pool table. If you want to relive your high school or college hair-days, Heaven on Thursday beats out any other retro dance night in town. Just be sure to get there early to avoid the line and maybe find a parking space.
