An
important jazz landmark, the Bohemian Caverns first
opened about 80 years ago under the moniker Crystal
Caverns. The main floor houses a
restaurant where a huge photo of U Street in its
"Black Broadway" heyday reminds diners of
the Caverns' history. To experience these,
descend the stairs to the nightclub, an
entirely different realm from that above. Although live jazz
is the true draw, the Caverns' "Lounge 2001"
inhabits the upper level on weekend nights with a DJ
spinning what the club has dubbed "smooth funky
rhythms." The lounge, along with the restaurant,
should insure a steady stream of customers looking for
a new place to go on U Street.
